In architectural terms, a podium (plural of 'podium') is usually a flat, rectangular structure used as an assembly point for conferences, meetings or theatrical presentations. The podium may be a simple type of metal platform or it may include raised paneling and bracing for supporting load-bearing elements. In architectural terms, a podium is used for setting up exhibits. It is elevated and is sometimes equipped with lighting to assist the audience in seeing the items being displayed. There are two basic types of Podium: 

Open and enclosed. Closed Podiums sections of platforms that are mutually attached to each other and either stand alone or are connected to each other by means of a partition. Open Podiums, on the other hand, are platforms that have a frame and are free standing. The term "open Podium" is used when more than one seat is provided on the platform.

Wood Frame Podiums :

Wood Frame Podiums is built by framing a single shaft that runs through the center of the platform and connecting each piece to a secured piece in the top half. This method eliminates the need for beams. These types of Podiums can be constructed from several types of wood including; Pine, Cedar, Redwood, Hickory, Elm, and Spruce. Some of these types of Podiums can also come in a pre-manufactured form that includes everything except the wood frame. This pre-manufactured option often carries a shorter warranty than that of the raw product and comes at a higher cost.

A Parking Podium is another popular type of Podium that requires little structural upfront investment. It is usually constructed in a parking garage design. These structures can range in height from four stories to eight stories and can be constructed on or off site. Most Parking Podium require a minimum of a 50% excess to the roof height of the building to be able to be installed. These structures provide a quick solution to the problem of inadequate floor space in parking garages. A Parking Podium may be used in conjunction with concrete slabs to create a more permanent solution.
